Obtaining his first library card at the age of thirteen, Colin became an avid reader of Fantasy and the mysteries of the Universe. He has an inbuilt curiosity for lost knowledge and ancient texts that may help to unlock the secrets of consciousness and the universe.

Living in Oxford for many years, he has now moved back to his home county of Warwickshire where he enjoys creating and working with his wife on their garden in which he writes and entertains their two grandsons. He has always been an artist and writer and is inspired by the worlds created by Robert E Howard and Michael Moorcock, with the artwork of Frank Frazetta.

Colin Sephton – Artist

“If you scorn painting, which is the sole imitator of all the manifest works of nature, you will certainly be scorning a subtle invention, which with philosophical and subtle speculation considers all manner of forms….Truly this is science, the legitimate daughter of nature….”

Leonardo Da Vinci

After earning a Master’s degree in Engineering, Colin built a 24-year career in automotive design and manufacturing, and a further 18 years teaching Product Design and Engineering. Alongside this technical background, he has developed a distinctive artistic voice through both traditional fine art and digital fantasy art.

His portfolio showcases a wide range of work, from landscapes and portraiture to imaginative fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction-inspired art. Colin also creates original illustrations of Timeslayers, his fantasy novel that blends time travel, adventure, and worldbuilding. Many of his artworks are available to purchase as original pieces or prints through Etsy.

Colin’s artistic process is influenced by his engineering background, where precision, form, and structure meet imagination and storytelling. This unique blend gives his fine art a sense of technical depth and his fantasy art a vivid realism that connects with audiences. Whether he is painting atmospheric landscapes, designing intricate steampunk-inspired scenes, or developing concept artwork for science fiction ideas, his work reflects both technical mastery and a boundless creative spirit. He often draws inspiration from history, mythology, and speculative fiction, bringing these influences into his paintings and digital works to create art that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Through SephtonArt, Colin welcomes art lovers, collectors, and readers to explore his creative world. Visitors can browse his online galleries to discover original fine art paintings, imaginative fantasy and steampunk illustrations, and digital artwork that brings storytelling to life. Many pieces are available to purchase through his Etsy shop, and Colin also accepts commissions for personalized artwork, making his portfolio accessible to both private collectors and fans of fantasy and science fiction. Based in Warwickshire, he enjoys connecting with audiences locally and internationally, sharing a passion for creativity that bridges traditional art, modern digital techniques, and imaginative narrative.

When we hear the word mythology, we usually think of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt or Scandinavia. But those myths were once new stories. The people who created them weren’t thinking, “We’re creating mythology.” They were trying to understand their world, their gods, nature, consciousness, death and the mysteries of existence. So could we be doing the same thing today? Perhaps modern mythology is already emerging through stories such as Star Wars, The Matrix and Dune. And perhaps fantasy has an important role to play in creating the myths of the future. This is at the heart of what I’m trying to do with The Chronicles of the Charon: combine fantasy, mythology and philosophy to explore questions about consciousness, reality, time and the human search for meaning. I’ve been writing more about modern mythology and the ideas behind my books on my website. What story would you say is a modern myth? Please let me know in the comments, I want to know if I’m the only one who thinks this! #timeslayers #modernmyth #mythology #starwars #dune We understand more about the human brain than ever before, yet one enormous mystery remains, why are we conscious at all? We can measure brain activity. We can observe neurons firing. We can describe what happens when different parts of the brain are stimulated. But explaining the machinery isn’t necessarily the same as explaining the experience. Why does it feel like something to be you? This question has taken me from ancient philosophy and the concept of Atman ( the universal soul) to modern ideas about consciousness and the nature of reality, and eventually into the philosophy behind my own novels. I’m exploring more of these ideas on my website, alongside the stories and worlds I’ve created around them. Do you think consciousness is produced by the brain, or is consciousness something more fundamental? I’d genuinely like to know what you think, so post it in the comments. #timeslayers #philosophicalfriday #philosophy #speculativefiction #consciousness This artwork captures the moment the Charon arrive on Earth and the spawning of demons from limbo occurs. I scanned the original sketch in and painted it using Photoshop. The Charon immortals held captive in Limbo and arrive as hawk-headed demons before turning into the Beautiful and the Damned. #timeslayers #characterdesign #fantasyart #worldbuilding #conceptart Why Do Myths Survive? Why have some myths survived for thousands of years? It’s not because people simply believed they were true, it’s because myths contain something deeper than facts. They give us stories about love, death, sacrifice, power, transformation and our place in the universe. That’s why we still tell stories about Odysseus, Prometheus and the gods of ancient Egypt. And perhaps that’s why modern stories like Star Wars and Dune have become mythic too. A myth doesn’t have to be ancient. It just has to speak to something timeless within us. And that’s what I’m trying to do with my own mythology. Let me know what you think in the comments. #timeslayers #odysseus #dune #mythmaking #modernmyth I’m busy editing my 4th novel, which at the moment is still under wraps. It’s currently circa 95k words and the cover is about 80% complete! I’m looking forward to the reveal! My editing style varies, it’s a mix of working digitally and hand written on print outs, with the overall arcs and end goals for each section mapped out in excel so I don’t lose sight of the end goal. How do you edit? Please let me know in the comments. If you want to know more about me, and what I write, checkout my website, colinsephton.com. #timeslayers #editing #fantasy #fantasynovel #bookstagram The idea of the soul has fascinated humanity for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians had their concept of the ka and ba. Plato believed the soul was immortal. Hindu philosophy speaks of Atman, the eternal soul. And countless cultures have imagined some essential part of us that survives beyond the body. I find that idea fascinating. Not because I think we necessarily have all the answers, but because it raises one of the biggest questions imaginable, are we physical beings who happen to be conscious, or conscious beings temporarily experiencing a physical existence? It’s a question that sits at the heart of my own fantasy writing. Let me know what YOU believe in the comments, I really am interested for your opinion. And for more philosophy, join me every Friday, so follow now 💙 #timeslayers #philosophicalfriday #soulawakening #consciousness #philosophy Another version of Adonai, Grand Master of the Charon. One of my favourite characters, his beautiful face in paradox with his muscular body and merciless nature. The character design is actually based on a well known rock singer! Can you guess who? #timeslayers #characterdesign #worldbuilding #conceptart #fantasyart Why is the dragon one of the most enduring creatures in mythology? From European legends to the great serpent traditions of Asia, dragons have appeared again and again in human storytelling. They can represent chaos, destruction and danger—but also wisdom, power, transformation and the guardianship of ancient knowledge. Perhaps that’s why they continue to fascinate us. In The Chronicles of the Charon, I wanted to take that ancient symbol and give it my own interpretation. Calabi-Ya, my red dragon and harlequin dandy, is certainly not the stereotypical dragon sitting on a pile of gold. But the old idea remains: sometimes the creature guarding the greatest mystery is also the key to understanding it. What does the dragon represent to you? #timeslayers #mythology #mythmaking #dragon #dragonsofinstagram
