I’m busy editing my 4th novel, which at the moment is still under wraps. It’s currently circa 95k words and the cover is about 80% complete! I’m looking forward to the reveal! My editing style varies, it’s a mix of working digitally and hand written on print outs, with the overall arcs and end goals for each section mapped out in excel so I don’t lose sight of the end goal. How do you edit? Please let me know in the comments. If you want to know more about me, and what I write, checkout my website, colinsephton.com. #timeslayers #editing #fantasy #fantasynovel #bookstagram The idea of the soul has fascinated humanity for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians had their concept of the ka and ba. Plato believed the soul was immortal. Hindu philosophy speaks of Atman, the eternal soul. And countless cultures have imagined some essential part of us that survives beyond the body. I find that idea fascinating. Not because I think we necessarily have all the answers, but because it raises one of the biggest questions imaginable, are we physical beings who happen to be conscious, or conscious beings temporarily experiencing a physical existence? It’s a question that sits at the heart of my own fantasy writing. Let me know what YOU believe in the comments, I really am interested for your opinion. And for more philosophy, join me every Friday, so follow now 💙 #timeslayers #philosophicalfriday #soulawakening #consciousness #philosophy Another version of Adonai, Grand Master of the Charon. One of my favourite characters, his beautiful face in paradox with his muscular body and merciless nature. The character design is actually based on a well known rock singer! Can you guess who? #timeslayers #characterdesign #worldbuilding #conceptart #fantasyart Why is the dragon one of the most enduring creatures in mythology? From European legends to the great serpent traditions of Asia, dragons have appeared again and again in human storytelling. They can represent chaos, destruction and danger—but also wisdom, power, transformation and the guardianship of ancient knowledge. Perhaps that’s why they continue to fascinate us. In The Chronicles of the Charon, I wanted to take that ancient symbol and give it my own interpretation. Calabi-Ya, my red dragon and harlequin dandy, is certainly not the stereotypical dragon sitting on a pile of gold. But the old idea remains: sometimes the creature guarding the greatest mystery is also the key to understanding it. What does the dragon represent to you? #timeslayers #mythology #mythmaking #dragon #dragonsofinstagram One of the things I love about philosophy is that a simple question can completely change the way you look at the world. We tend to assume that reality is fixed, objective and obvious. But the moment we start questioning how we perceive it, things become much stranger. Perhaps that’s one reason fantasy has always fascinated me. It gives us permission to question the rules of reality and imagine what might exist beyond them. The worlds in my novels begin with that question, what if reality is far stranger than we have been taught to believe? Where do you stand, let me know in the comments. #timeslayers #philosophy #philosophicalfriday #reality #speculativefiction Exploring ideas in a rough pencil sketch for Indigo Gemstone after her transformation. Sometimes I like to sketch and keep the drawings around for a while before I decide to turn them into a fully finished illustration or painting. Join me next week for another World Building Wednesday #timeslayers #fantasyart #worldbuildingwednesday #worldbuilding #conceptart Today I’m looking at the Hero’s Journey. Why do we keep telling stories about heroes leaving the familiar world and entering the unknown? Because the journey is rarely about the destination, the real journey is transformation. Odysseus, Frodo, Luke Skywalker and Paul Atreides all face something beyond themselves, but what makes their stories mythic is how those experiences change them. Perhaps that’s why these stories continue to resonate. Beneath the dragons, spaceships and distant worlds is something deeply human, the journey into the unknown is ultimately a journey into ourselves. And that is one of the things I explore through the mythology of The Chronicles of the Charon. What fictional hero has changed the way you see the world? Let me know in the comments. #timeslayers #mythology #modernmyth #mythmaking #herosjourney I’ve just finished reading Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light. It follows Sam, a powerful human who has adopted the identity of the Buddha on a distant planet colonized by humans. The ruling elite have gained godlike powers through advanced technology, and Sam rebels against their control by reviving Buddhism and challenging the “gods.” It blends science fiction, Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and philosophical ideas into a story about power, freedom, religion, and what it means to be human. It’s the kind of novel that is right up my street! #timeslayers #myreading #bookstagram #readinglist #tobereadpile
